The landscape in wintertime is wholly changed over with new cool tones. I am so drawn to how the earth/sky relationship has a tendency to reverse itself, with the darker values in the sky and the lighter values in the earth. Painting in the cold air is exhilarating and quickly takes you out of your comfort zone. To paint outdoors in the cold weather means learning how to hold the brush like a rapier with your fat mittens. It means making sure you are ready to jump into it right away, find a motif quickly, work fast, stop as soon as the painting is realized. All this lends itself to new discoveries, in Nature and in ourselves.
